HOW IS ZINC PRODUCED?

BACKGROUND

Nearly 10 million tonnes per year of zinc are produced around the world. The standard product is 99.995% pure.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ZINC & LEAD

Lead and zinc deposits occur naturally together, and lead has a significant influence in the production of zinc.

ELECTROLYTIC ZINC PRODUCTION

Most of the world’s zinc is produced by the electrolytic process.

RETORT ZINC PRODUCTION

Retort production of zinc was the original method used but, apart from in China, retorts are no longer used.

ISP ZINC PRODUCTION

The Imperial Smelting Process (ISP), which is a thermal process, was developed to produce zinc and lead simultaneously.
